A memorial portrait of the longtime Boston Pops conductor, installed on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston.
Boston, MA
This public memorial by sculptor Ralph Helmick portrays Arthur Fiedler, who led the Boston Pops for many years. The piece contrasts his friendly public image with a more guarded private personality. It is built as a layered image that appears clearest from a distance and becomes harder to read as viewers come closer, a visual metaphor for the conductor's character. The work is made of sand-blasted aluminum set on a granite base and was completed in 1984.
