The International Museum of Surgical Science occupies a 1917 mansion modeled on Le Petit Trianon at 1524 N. Lake Shore Drive in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood. Founded in 1954 by Dr. Max Thorek as an arm of the International College of Surgeons, it is the only museum in North America devoted exclusively to the history of surgery. Its more than 10,000 square feet of galleries hold artifacts spanning apothecaries, uniforms, plastic surgery and antique surgical instruments, alongside contemporary art exhibitions that engage with medicine and the body.
