Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Ave · Cleveland, OH
President James A. Garfield, who died in 1881 after being shot, rests in this sandstone tower on a hill in Lake View Cemetery, dedicated on Memorial Day 1890. The tower is 180 feet high and 50 feet across, and five outside panels with more than 100 life-size figures show scenes from his life and death. Inside, Memorial Hall has a statue of Garfield, a golden mosaic dome and stained glass, and the crypt below holds the caskets of Garfield and his wife Lucretia. A stairway leads up to a balcony with a view of Lake Erie and the Cleveland skyline.
