800 S Halsted St · Chicago, IL
Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded Hull House in 1889 to serve immigrant families on Chicago's Near West Side, and by 1911 it had grown to 13 buildings. Two survive: the original 1856 Hull mansion and the 1905 Residents' Dining Hall, which was moved about 200 yards. Today they form a museum run by the University of Illinois Chicago that honors Addams, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The museum website is down for now, so book a visit through the form on the UIC page.
