About Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site

Major General Henry Knox, commander of the American artillery, set up his military headquarters several times at John Ellison's 1754 Georgian-style house in Vails Gate during the Revolutionary War. Visitors can tour the house and learn how the Ellison family and other mid-Hudson Valley families lived about 200 years ago. The Ellisons ran a milling and trade business, and remains of their mill and underground raceway can still be visited. The site also hosts lectures, living history demonstrations, and holiday programs.
