95 Main St · Freeport, ME
L.L.Bean has sold from Freeport since its founder opened his first retail space above the post office in 1917, and the flagship campus on Main Street is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The reimagined store has a grand double staircase, a two-tiered 15,000-gallon trout pond and a 6,000-gallon stream tank with viewing bubbles. You can browse apparel, footwear, camping and boat gear, have something monogrammed at the Custom Shop, and stop at the 1912 Café or Discovery Park outside.
General shopping guidance
Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.
Vendor hours are their own thing
Market stalls and independent sellers keep shorter hours than the building around them, and quiet days end early.
Bring a tote and a little cash
Smaller sellers do not all take cards, and bags are rarely free.
Weekdays browse, weekends buzz
Pick the weekday for a proper look at the shelves and the weekend for the atmosphere.
Ask about shipping
If something will not survive the suitcase, plenty of sellers will send it home for you.
