I-75 across the Straits of Mackinac, between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace · Mackinaw City, MI
The Mackinac Bridge, known as the Mighty Mac, has carried traffic between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace since November 1, 1957. It runs 26,372 feet in all, with a 3,800-foot main span, towers that rise 552 feet above the water and a roadway 199 feet above the straits at midspan. You pay a toll per vehicle to cross. Each Labor Day the bridge opens to walkers for the Mackinac Bridge Walk, a tradition that began in 1958.
General sightseeing guidance
Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.
The forecast is part of the ticket
Haze, low cloud, and rain flatten a view. Clear-day visits are worth rearranging your plans for.
Golden hour sells out first
Sunset slots at observation decks and cruises are the first to go, so book those further ahead.
Dress a layer warmer
It is always breezier up high and out on the water than it feels at street level.
Timed entry is common
Plenty of landmarks release tickets in windows rather than at the door, so check before you walk over.
