The Maine State Museum is the state government's own museum, sitting next to the Maine State House in Augusta. Its four floors of exhibits trace the state's story, from Ice Age mastodons and Native American artifacts to maritime objects and working mills. Collections cover prehistory, history, and natural science. The museum has been closed for a major renovation of its 55-year-old Cultural Building, which also houses the State Archives and State Library. A first phase of a Grand Reopening is planned for October 24, 2026, and admission is free through the end of 2026.
