Walk through the granite cells of an 1811 county jail in Wiscasset and read the ships, maps and poems prisoners left on the walls.
133 Federal St., Wiscasset, ME · Wiscasset, ME
Built in 1811 above the Sheepscot River, the Lincoln County jail held prisoners until 1913 and briefly served as Maine's first state prison. Its three stories of cells have thick granite walls and heavy iron doors, and many walls still carry prisoners' drawings of ships, maps and lines of poetry. The attached brick jailer's house has a 19th-century kitchen and changing exhibits. Walk-in tours run on summer weekends; arrive by 3:30 p.m. Adults pay $15 and children get in free.
