About Maria Hernandez Park

This 6.87-acre park is the largest in Bushwick and the center of the neighborhood's public life. It opened as Bushwick Park in the 1890s on land partly owned by P.T. Barnum, and in 1989 it was renamed for Maria Hernandez, a neighbor killed for standing up to drug dealers on her block. Today it has a rainbow-colored playground with a water feature, basketball and handball courts, two dog runs and a circular plaza with a stage used for events. Entry is free.
