Home of educator and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune on the Bethune-Cookman University campus, with its original furnishings intact.
640 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL · Daytona Beach, FL
Known locally as The Retreat, this house on the Bethune-Cookman University campus in Daytona Beach was Bethune's residence from 1913 until her death in 1955. Built in 1905 by a Black architect and builder, it has had only minor preservation renovations, and many furnishings and artifacts are her own belongings. Visitors can see the guest bedroom where First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stayed. Her grave and memorial lie just west of the house on campus, offering a quiet place to reflect. The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974.
