The center sits on the site of Winter Quarters, a temporary Latter-day Saint settlement along the Mormon Trail. Its exhibits cover the journey to the Salt Lake Valley by wagon, handcart, ship, and train. Nearby stand the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery, with a monument by sculptor Avard Fairbanks, and the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple. The wider settlement network along the Missouri River was temporary, yet many residents farmed, ran businesses, and published a newspaper while they waited to continue west.
