Katahdin, the Penobscot name for 'Great Mountain', rises 5,269 feet as the centerpiece of Baxter State Park and the highest point in Maine. A summit hike gains around 4,000 feet and the park puts the average round trip at 8 to 12 hours. The Hunt Trail follows the Appalachian Trail to its northern end on Baxter Peak. Day hikers who are not camping in the park need a Katahdin Trailhead Pass to be sure of parking at a Katahdin trailhead from June to October.
