The Oregon Dunes stretch about 40 miles along the coast between North Bend and Florence, with some dunes reaching 500 feet above sea level. The area is open for hiking, off-highway vehicle riding, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping. At the Oregon Dunes Overlook, accessible platforms look over the sand to the Pacific and a 2-mile round trip leads to the beach. Frank Herbert's novel Dune was partly inspired by these dunes.
