Sand Bar State Park sits on the mainland end of a natural sandbar that reaches toward South Hero Island on Lake Champlain. The park is open to day visitors and offers a 2,000-foot sandy beach with shallow water well out from shore, making it a popular spot for families. Visitors can swim, rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards, fish outside the swimming area, picnic at tables and grills, and play volleyball. A beach access wheelchair is available at no cost. The park was started in 1933 and its stone bathhouse was completed in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It borders the Sand Bar Wildlife Refuge, where hunting, fishing, and trapping are not allowed.
