About Shakespeare Garden

The Shakespeare Garden sits in a quiet central part of the Northwestern University Evanston campus, enclosed by a double wall of hawthorn hedges. The Garden Club of Evanston began the plot in 1915 to honor Shakespeare and to celebrate ties between England and America. Jens Jensen, a Danish-American landscape architect, designed it, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The garden holds flowers, herbs, and shrubs that appear in Shakespeare's works, and a memorial fountain with a bronze relief of his head. Garden Club members still maintain it, and it is a popular spot for tours and weddings.
