Singletary Lake State Park covers 1,221 acres around Singletary Lake, one of the largest Carolina bays, an oval lake fed only by rain. The Civilian Conservation Corps built its group camps in the late 1930s, and organized groups still book the cabins, mess halls and 500-foot swimming pier. Day visitors can hike a one-mile trail, fish and paddle. Entry for day use is free, and the park is 50 miles northwest of Wilmington.
