Spiro Mounds is the only prehistoric American Indian archaeological site in Oklahoma open to the public. Between about AD 800 and 1450, Spiro leaders ran a trade and religious center on a bend of the Arkansas River with ties from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. The protected 150 acres include 12 mounds and nearly two miles of trails. Trails open only through the visitor center during its hours, and many exhibit pieces are being returned to tribes.
