Sunshine Skyway Bridge

I-275 / US 19 across the mouth of Tampa Bay · St. Petersburg, FL

Why you should go…

The Sunshine Skyway carries I-275 and US 19 across the mouth of Tampa Bay for 4.14 miles, rising to give ships 181 feet of clearance. The cable-stayed span opened in 1987 to replace the bridge struck by a freighter in 1980. For a look at the whole structure, head to Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, where approaches of the old bridge now serve as fishing piers, and stay after dark to see more than 1,800 LEDs light the span.

General sightseeing guidance

Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.

  • The forecast is part of the ticket

Haze, low cloud, and rain flatten a view. Clear-day visits are worth rearranging your plans for.

  • Golden hour sells out first

Sunset slots at observation decks and cruises are the first to go, so book those further ahead.

  • Dress a layer warmer

It is always breezier up high and out on the water than it feels at street level.

  • Timed entry is common

Plenty of landmarks release tickets in windows rather than at the door, so check before you walk over.
