A local history museum in a former Warren County courthouse, built in 1858, with one of the largest Civil War collections in the South.
Vicksburg, MS
The museum occupies the 1858 Warren County courthouse, which served that role until a new courthouse opened in 1939. A historical society formed in 1946 to convert the empty building into a local history museum. Its holdings range from pre-Columbian artifacts to portraits, furniture, china, silver, toys, tools, and clothing, and include a large Civil War collection. Visitors can see Confederate flags, a tie Jefferson Davis wore at his inauguration, and a Teddy Bear given to a local child by Theodore Roosevelt. The building is a National Historic Landmark and has hosted figures such as Ulysses S. Grant and Booker T. Washington. The museum is run by a private nonprofit historical society.
