The Jackson Zoo started in 1919 as a collection of firefighters' pets at the downtown fire station and moved to Livingston Park in the 1920s, where early buildings such as the Monkey Castle still stand. Today the city-run zoo keeps hundreds of animals on its grounds in west Jackson. Admission is $5 for ages 2 and up, and every ticket is $2 on Tuesdays. The endangered species carousel costs $2 a ride, and the splash pad is included in summer. Outside food and coolers are not allowed, though bottled water is fine.
