A historic railway depot in Port Huron where Thomas Edison once worked as a young telegraph-era news reporter, now a museum about his life and inventions.
510 Edison Parkway, Port Huron, MI 48060 · Port Huron, MI
The museum sits inside the Fort Gratiot train depot, built in 1858, which Edison used as a workplace between 1859 and 1863. Exhibits trace his family's move from Ohio to Port Huron, his childhood schooling and home learning, his early business ventures, and his setbacks before his inventing successes. Re-created period rooms and hands-on displays let visitors take part. A sit-down theater, live science demonstrations, and a restored baggage car housing a replica of Edison's mobile chemistry lab and print shop add to the visit. Outdoor displays around the depot cover local Native American history, forts, transportation, and the city's role as an immigration gateway.
