About University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art

The University of Iowa's art museum holds about 17,000 objects, and its headline piece is Jackson Pollock's Mural, painted in 1943 for Peggy Guggenheim. You will also find Max Beckmann's triptych Karneval, works by Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky, and the Stanley Collection of African Art. After the 2008 flood forced the old museum out, a new building with more than 16,500 square feet of galleries opened downtown in August 2022. Admission is always free, and the galleries stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
