Woods Bay State Park lies in Florence County near Olanta and protects a large oval wetland basin of the type called a Carolina Bay. Visitors can wander a boardwalk that crosses a cypress and tupelo swamp, where alligators are often spotted, or follow a loop trail around the mill pond. The landscape shifts from pine uplands to shrub bog, and the park's bird list is extensive. A picnic shelter can be reserved, and pets are welcome in most outdoor areas if leashed.
