About Alabama Museum of Natural History

The Alabama Museum of Natural History, founded in 1831, is the oldest museum in the state and its official natural history museum. It fills Smith Hall, a 1909 Beaux Arts building on the University of Alabama campus, where a marble staircase leads up to the skylit Grand Gallery. Exhibits cover the Age of Dinosaurs, the Coal Age and the Ice Age, with a replica of Basilosaurus, the state fossil, and a mastodon skull from the Tombigbee River. The Hodges meteorite hit a woman near Sylacauga in 1954.
