About Moundville Archaeological Park

Moundville was the center of a Mississippian chiefdom from the 11th to the 16th century, and the park covers 185 acres with 29 platform mounds set around a large plaza. It is the second-largest classic Mississippian site in the country after Cahokia. Check in at the Admissions Building, then visit the Jones Archaeological Museum and walk the grounds. The north half of the park is closed for erosion repairs, but Mound P and the museum stay open.
