Wander the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America, on the banks of the tidal Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia.
5400 Lindbergh Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19143 · Philadelphia, PA
John Bartram started this garden in 1728, and it is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. Its nearly 50 acres sit on the tidal Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia; the historic Bartram House opens only for special events. Every Franklinia tree alive today descends from plants the Bartrams grew, and you can see them here. Entry is free every day, the community boathouse has kayak launches, and the welcome center lends fishing rods.
