Baton Rouge National Cemetery became a national cemetery in 1867, gathering Union dead from battlefields around Baton Rouge and as far away as Camden, Arkansas. The 7.7-acre ground, enclosed by an 1878 brick wall, holds more than 5,000 burials. Look for the 1909 Massachusetts Monument and the grave of General Philemon Thomas, who led the 1810 capture of the Baton Rouge fort. Enter through the iron gates on North 19th Street.
