Black Pond Woods is a 34-acre wooded preserve on the north side of Ann Arbor, lying between Traver Road and Pontiac Trail. Its trails pass through oak, hickory, maple and dogwood forest, and spring wildflowers are a highlight. The preserve takes its name from a seasonal pond that fills with rainwater in spring, turns dark brown from tannins in leaf litter, and dries up in summer, so it holds no fish. The site includes mature oak-hickory forest, a former field now growing back with shrubs, and a wet meadow in neighboring Leslie Park. It connects to the Leslie Science and Nature Center and Leslie Park, and the city bought the land in 1991 after local residents pushed to keep it from being developed.
