Bird Hills is the largest natural area within Ann Arbor, covering 146 acres of wooded hills and ravines. Its unpaved trail network lets visitors choose a brief walk or a long hike through forest filled with beech, sugar maple, oaks, hickory, and spring wildflowers. The park has no facilities, bicycles are not allowed, and dogs must be leashed. Its history includes past logging, grazing, and farming, along with later citizen efforts to protect the land from development. Controlled spring and fall burns by the city's Natural Area Preservation program help keep native plant communities healthy.
