Stop at the downtown fountain where a town thanked a cotton pest for pushing its farmers into peanuts.
College St and Main St, downtown Enterprise · Enterprise, AL
Enterprise put up this monument in 1919 to thank the boll weevil, the beetle that wrecked local cotton and pushed farmers to plant peanuts. A classical woman holds a giant boll weevil over her head above a fountain at College and Main Streets, and the whole piece stands over 13 feet tall. The figure you see today is a resin replica put up in 1998 after vandals damaged the original. Read the inscription calling the weevil a herald of prosperity.
