The Boston Athenæum is a membership library founded in 1807, set in a 12-story landmark building on Beacon Hill. A first-floor ticket covers the Norma Jean Calderwood Gallery and the art and special collection displays, and docent-led art and architecture tours run through the week. A $40 day membership opens every floor, including the fifth-floor terrace. The collection holds much of George Washington's personal library. Tours often sell out several days ahead, so book early.
