The museum, opened in 1966 and earlier called the Air Force Space and Missile Museum, collects, restores, and displays historic items connected to the development of U.S. Space Force space launch work. Its main exhibits sit in launch complex hangars and blockhouses on a working military installation, so seeing most of them requires a scheduled certified tour. A separate public site, the Sands Space History Center just outside the gate, is open without a tour and is free to enter. Volunteer guides, many with military or space program backgrounds, lead many visits.
