Charles Towne Landing

A state historic site on the Ashley River marking where English settlers first landed in 1670.

About Charles Towne Landing

This state historic site in West Ashley preserves the spot where English colonists came ashore in 1670 and started the settlement that became South Carolina. Visitors can explore a hands-on exhibit hall, walk a self-guided history trail, and board a replica 17th-century trading ship docked in Old Towne Creek. The grounds also hold a small natural habitat zoo called the Animal Forest, reproduction cannons fired on special event days, roughly 80 acres of gardens with historic live oaks, and a restored house used for weddings and gatherings.
