Tour a fortified 1707 Dutch brick house across the Hudson from Albany, where a British surgeon is said to have written Yankee Doodle.

Crailo is a brick manor house built in 1707 by Hendrick van Rensselaer, with gun ports from its days as a fortified farmhouse. It is now a state museum of Dutch colonial life in the Hudson Valley, with a fur-trade exhibit, a cellar kitchen and finds from the Fort Orange excavations in Albany. Tradition says British army surgeon Richard Shuckburgh wrote Yankee Doodle here in 1755. Guided tours cost $5 for adults and are free for children 12 and under, and the riverside grounds are free from dawn to dusk.
