About District of Columbia War Memorial

Dedicated on November 11, 1931, this open, circular Doric temple of Vermont marble honors the 499 residents of the District of Columbia who died in service during World War I. Their names, Black and white, men and women, are carved together into the base inside. The memorial is 47 feet across, ringed by 12 fluted columns, and was built to double as a bandstand; the U.S. Marine Band played at the dedication. It sits in a grove of trees just south of the Reflecting Pool, near the Lincoln Memorial, and there is no fee to visit.
