This garden memorial near the Jefferson Memorial honors George Mason, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. A life-size bronze of Mason by Wendy Ross sits on a bench with his books, hat and walking stick, under a 72-foot curved trellis. Low stone walls carry his writings, including his words against slavery. Dedicated in 2002, it is often quieter than the big memorials nearby. There is no cost to visit, and the grounds are open 24 hours.
