See the gilded Victory atop a granite column beside the White House, with a bed of red flowers shaped like a giant 1.
17th Street and State Place NW, President's Park · Washington, DC
This column in President's Park, next to the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, honors soldiers of the Army's First Division. President Coolidge dedicated it in 1924 with the names of 5,516 men lost in World War I, and later additions cover World War II through Iraq and Afghanistan. A 15-foot gilded Victory stands on top. Come in spring to fall, when red flowers form the division's Big Red One in front.
