About Fort Caroline National Memorial

Fort Caroline is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve in the Jacksonville area. Its exhibit explains a French settlement in Florida that did not last. The French founded the post in 1564 on the banks of the St. Johns River. Spanish forces later attacked and captured it, and the Spanish then held the site for several years under another name. The memorial is one of several Timucuan Preserve sites that visitors can see during a day trip.
