Fort Frederick sits on the Potomac River and anchors a 585-acre state park in Washington County. Built in 1756, it is described as the only stone fort a British colony built during the French and Indian War. Its stone wall and two barracks have been restored to how they looked in 1758. The site has also served in later conflicts, including use as a prison for British soldiers during the American Revolution and as a guard post for the C&O Canal during the Civil War. Visitors can explore exhibits in the visitor center, fort barracks, and a Civilian Conservation Corps museum. Costumed staff demonstrate daily life during the French and Indian War on set weekends and during summer. The park also offers a boat launch, canoeing, campsites, hiking trails, and a picnic pavilion with a playground.
