About Fort Lancaster and Battlefield State Historic Site

This state historic site preserves the remains of a frontier fort built in the 1850s to guard travelers and mail carriers on the San Antonio to El Paso road. Its garrison later faced a notable 1867 attack by Native American fighters, and the defenders were Buffalo Soldiers. Visitors can walk among ruins of more than 30 former buildings, including a blacksmith shop, hospital, bakery, and trading store, while enjoying wide views and local wildlife. A visitor center offers an exhibit, and guided tours cover the fort's role on the frontier and the battle.
