About Fort McKavett State Historic Site

This state historic site preserves the remains of a nineteenth-century United States Army post on a hill in West Texas. Visitors can walk among restored officers' quarters, barracks, a hospital, a schoolhouse, and headquarters, and see ruins of other structures, including a commanding officer's residence that burned in 1941. Interpretive programs cover the lives of soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, women, and children who lived at the post. Living history events, a self-guided tour, guided group tours, and a visitor center with a museum and gift shop are available.
