Frontenac State Park covers 2,644 acres of bluff, prairie and floodplain forest on Lake Pepin, a wide stretch of the Mississippi about 10 miles southeast of Red Wing. About 260 bird species pass through on the river flyway, and bald eagles are common in fall, winter and spring. Nineteen miles of trails run along the bluff edge to In Yan Teopa, a natural limestone arch, and down through ravines to the shore and Sand Point. Limestone quarried here went into the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. You need a Minnesota state park vehicle permit, $7 for one day.
