The Gibbes Museum of Art grew out of the Carolina Art Association, founded in 1858, and moved into its Beaux Arts building at 135 Meeting Street in 1905, designed by Frank Pierce Milburn. Its collection of more than 10,000 works is mostly American art, much of it connected to Charleston and the South. The building reopened on May 28, 2016, after a two-year, $13.5 million renovation. Check the museum's own site for current hours and tickets before you go.
