About Grant Cottage State Historic Site

Grant Cottage is where former President Ulysses S. Grant spent his final months while battling throat cancer. He arrived in mid-June 1885 and used the quiet mountain retreat to finish his memoirs before he died in July. Visitors can tour the lower floor, which holds original furnishings, personal belongings, and the bed where he passed away. The grounds include a newly accessible overlook with views across the landscape, walking trails, and a visitor center with exhibits and a gift shop. The site is state-owned and run day to day by a nonprofit friends group, and it holds both state historic site status and National Historic Landmark recognition.
