About Saratoga Battle Monument

The Saratoga Monument is a 155-foot granite obelisk on a bluff in the village of Victory, on the ground of British General Burgoyne's last camp before he surrendered on October 17, 1777. Its cornerstone was laid on the 100th anniversary in 1877, it was finished in 1883, and the National Park Service took it over in 1980. Bronze statues of Gates, Schuyler and Morgan fill three niches, while the fourth, facing the battlefield, stays empty for Benedict Arnold. When the monument is open you can climb 188 steps for a 360-degree view of the Hudson Valley, so call ahead for hours. Saratoga National Historical Park charges no entry fee.
