A bronze statue honoring the 19th-century American poet, placed at a downtown Washington crossroads.
Intersection of Connecticut Avenue and M Street NW, Washington, DC · Washington, DC
This downtown Washington monument shows the Victorian-era poet seated in academic dress, with his head resting on one hand and a book in the other. Its creation was driven by a memorial association formed in 1902, which lobbied Congress for a site at Connecticut Avenue and M Street. Funding came partly from Congress and partly from public donations. Sculptor William Couper, who had worked in sculpture since 1875, created the bronze figure, which rests on a reddish-brown marble pedestal from Scotland. The statue was unveiled in 1909, with the Chief Justice presiding and a granddaughter of the poet pulling the covering away. Organizers considered it the first national memorial dedicated to the arts.
