James Weldon Johnson Park sits in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, beside City Hall, the main public library branch, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Its roughly 1.5-acre site was originally a village green and is the oldest park in the city. For 120 years it was called Hemming Park or Hemming Plaza before its 2020 renaming. Visitors can eat at an open-air food truck café, hear live music, attend events, or rest beneath mature oak trees. A nonprofit founded in 2014 works with the city on revitalizing the space, and a redesign with a landscape architecture firm is planned to create a green public gathering place.
