The park sits on the north side of a lake system between Weems Road and Chaires Cross Road, next to the city's Tom Brown Park. The land was once wetland that drained through sinkholes, and later dams split the lake into three sections: a wet prairie, the open water of Piney Z Lake, and a cypress-lined lower lake. Visitors can fish, bike, run, walk, paddle, or simply relax while watching for wildlife. Facilities near the entrance include a small playground, picnic shelters, restrooms, drinking water, and a bike wash at the trailhead. Mountain bike trails range from beginner to expert, a shared-use trail serves hikers and walkers, and a paddling route explores the lower lake. Piney Z Lake is cooperatively managed by the city and the state wildlife commission.
