Marietta National Cemetery sits in downtown Marietta and was established in 1866 to honor Union dead from Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Its original sections radiate in circles from a central flagstaff, and its design is considered the most elaborate of the national cemeteries built in its era. Visitors can see a monumental entrance arch, the Wisconsin Monument topped by a bronze badger, and a marble obelisk honoring 20th Army Corps soldiers. The cemetery is closed to new burials except for certain family interments and is administered by Georgia National Cemetery. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
